Designing for end consumers and testing with the early riders, I helped tackled a few pain points and usability issues that were unique to self-driving cars:
• Limited pickup & dropoff location on the street, likely not where users want
• Need of walking instruction UI and saved location interaction
• Lack of understanding and transparency of vehicle behaviors
• Pedestrians gesture 95% of the times, but the car can't communicate back
As a UX design intern, I worked heavily on visual and motion interaction of the pickup dropoff selection, saved locations, icon animations, rider screen HUD signals, car-ID hardware UX, and car-finding AR concept. During my time there, I collaborated with 1 visual designer and 2 front end engineers to implement the changes that later launched as
Waymo One.
